The all-time favorites legendary spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan landed in a controversy over making a biopic as an Indian-origin Tamil cricketer from Sri Lanka’s Kandy. Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi will be essaying the role of legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan.

As Muttiah Muralitharan is the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 800 wickets, the film is named as ‘800’.

However, the movie ‘800’ has landed in hot soup even before its release as Sethupathi has been facing immense backlash on social media for playing Muralitharan’s character in the movie.

#ShameOnVijaySethupathi trended on Twitter on Wednesday and Thursday as fans expressed their outrage against the biopic. Sethupathi has been facing the heat on Twitter from a section of society that feels Muttiah Muralitharan never spoke against the alleged atrocities inflicted on the Tamil population in the country by the Sri Lankan government.

Fans also expressed anger over Sethupathi as he wears a Sri Lankan flag on his jersey. Pro Tamil groups and politicians have asked Sethupathi to stay away from the movie 800.

The Tamil fans are against Muralitharan’s biopic as they believe it portrays someone who sided with the government that has attacked Tamilians heroically over the years. However, Muralitharan had in controversy last year after expressing his support to the ruling Rajapaksa family and denying the alleged attack on Tamilians in 2009.

On being asked about the issue, Muralitharan said, “When the production house approached me for the film, I was first reluctant to give my nod. I then thought that the film would highlight the struggle of my parents, the contribution of my coaches and teachers, and everyone who has been part of my journey.”

“My family had its humble beginnings in a tea estate in Sri Lanka. The most affected in the 30-year long civil war in Sri Lanka was the Hill Country Tamils. Our life began in a conflict zone. The film ‘800’ talked about overcoming all these hurdles and managed to succeed in cricket. Is it my fault that I was born a Sri Lankan Tamil?” Muralitharan further added.

Muttiah Muralitharan made his international debut for Sri Lanka in 1992 and played his last game at the 2011 World Cup.
