The IPL 2020 match no 38 between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), where KXIP comprehensively defeated the table topper DC by five wickets, despite Shikhar Dhawan’s century and kept their hopes of qualifying playoffs alive.
While batting first, DC put 164 runs on the board with the help of Gabbar Dhawan’s fighting century. Shikhar Dhawan became the first in the 13-season history of the IPL to score back to back century.
Dhawan’s unbeaten effort of 106 (61b; 4×12; 6×3) coming mostly from shots square of the wicket, with those hit down the ground providing the garnishing.
While chasing 165 runs, KXIP lost the early wicket of skipper KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. Before DC could put pressure on KXIP, Gayle storm came in Dubai. Universe Boss Chris Gayle swung his massive arms to string a sequence of 4, 4, 6, 4, 6 from Tushar Deshpande’s over.
However, Ravichandran Ashwin took the wicket of Chris Gayle in the very next over. The partnership between Nicholas Pooran and Glenn Maxwell saved the match for KXIP.
The sensational half-century from Nicholas Pooran 53 (4×6; 6×3) in just 28 balls accelerate the KXIP scoreboard. However, Glenn Maxwell (32; 24b; 4×3) took KXIP close before Deepak Hooda, and Jimmy Neesham sealed a five-wicket win.
This was KXIP’s third successive victory, and now, KXIP has beaten the top three teams in IPL13 and the most comfortable one against table topper Delhi Capitals.
When Dhawan was on 80, Bishnoi foxed him with flight, but the catch dropped between fielders, and then Gabbar never looks back until achieved century. However, Delhi Capitals’ score of 164/5 is only 58 runs more than Dhawan’s score.
Although KXIP beat DC by five wickets, Shikhar Dhawan became the player of the match for his sensational 106* (61) knock.
