After Boris Johnson dropped out of the race on Sunday, Rishi Sunak, an Oxford University graduate, became the frontrunner for the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Sunak is likely to become the first Indian-origin head of the UK government as a result of the former Prime Minister’s decision. Sunak responded to the announcement by tweeting, ‘I want to fix our economy, unite our Party, and deliver for our country.’

Rishi Sunak is an Indian-origin man who is the son of a pharmacist and a National Health Service (NHS) general practitioner (GP).

His grandparents were from Punjab and had come to East Africa in search of a better life. Sunak’s grandfather, however, moved to Britain due to anti-Indian sentiment.

Sunak was born in Southhampton and attended a UK educational institution before graduating from Oxford University.

He married Akshata Murty, the daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, in 2009. They have two daughters.

Meanwhile, despite having the shortest tenure as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss is entitled to a salary of £150,000 per year.

Her resignation after only 45 days in office makes her the UK’s shortest-serving Prime Minister in history. George Canning, who served for 119 days before dying in office in 1827, was the second-shortest-serving prime minister.

As a result of the country’s spiralling cost-of-living crisis, the 47-year-old was faced with one of the most difficult in-trays in the top job.

Rishi Sunak worked as a waiter in a local Indian restaurant.

Sunak comes from humble beginnings. His first job was as a waiter at an Indian restaurant in Southampton.

“I was setting up tables, taking them down, cleaning, doing linen at the end of the night, and setting up for the next day,” he explained.

“It wasn’t glamorous work, it was hard work, but having a job was amazing,” Sunak said.

Sunak entered politics in 2015, when he won the safe Tory seat of Richmond in Yorkshire. He began his career in the Treasury with junior positions. He took his parliamentary oath on the Bhagavad Gita.

When his former boss, Sajid Javid, resigned in February 2020, he was unexpectedly elevated to the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer. The position is critical in the UK Cabinet.

Boris Johnson, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, lit Diwali diyas at his Downing Street residence.
