Legendary Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam Passes Away at 74, leaves behind a record of over 40,000 songs

SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away on September 25 at the age of 74. The singer had been at MGM Healthcare in Chennai since August 5 after he tested positive for coronavirus. The official statement from MGM Healthcare said that despite maximal life support measures, the singer died of a cardio-respiratory arrest. He had tested negative for Covid-19 on September 5.

He is a Guinness world record holder for his more than 40,000 songs over 50 years. From romantic hits to popular dance tracks, he sang some of Indian cinema’s best-known numbers, spanning 16 languages. Balasubrahmanyam also received two of India’s top civilian honours, Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2011.

SPB, as he was popularly known, began his career in Tamil and Telugu cinema in southern India, recently he became the highest paid singer in with industry and he is considered as one of the first crossover singer who gained success in Bollywood.

His first major breakthrough in southern films came when he sang for Tamil superstar MG Ramachandran in a 1969 film Adimai Penn. His breakthrough Bollywood film came in 1981 when he sang for “Ek Duuje Ke Liye”, a romantic tragedy that was one of the year’s biggest hits.

Several message of condolence started pouring both from Politician to Bollywood and other industry. Among them President Kovind took to the Twitter and said, “In the passing of music legend SP Balasubrahmanyam Indian music has lost one of its most melodious voices. Called ‘Paadum Nila’ or ‘Singing Moon’ by his countless fans, he was honoured with Padma Bhushan and many National Awards. Condolences to his family, friends and admirers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the death of SP Balasubramanyamm, saying with the passing away of the legendary singer, the cultural world has become a lot poorer.
