The National Sports Day is celebrated on 29 August all over the country to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. He was the Nation’s greatest hockey player of all time.

This day’s primary goal is to spread awareness on the importance of sports and daily activities in every individual’s life and to stress the need to stay fit and healthy.

The Wizard” popularly known for his magical touch, superb control, creativity, and extraordinary goal-scoring feats. Indian hockey touches greater heights under his talismanic leadership.

He had led India to three Olympic gold medals in the years – 1928, 1932, and 1936. He scored over 400 goals in his 22 years carrier from 1926 to 1948.

Major Dhyan Chand learned hockey from his coach Pankaj Gupta, and no one in the world has reached his level in hockey.

In 1956 he was bestowed with India’s third-highest civilian honor, Padma Bhushan. After putting his stamp on the international hockey arena, Chand also served in the Indian Army and brought laurels to the country.

Major Dhyan Chand Award, the highest award for lifetime achievement in India’s sports and games, is the most noted memorial for him.

After the death of Major Dhyan Chand in 1979, as a tribute to him, the Indian Postal Department issued stamps in his honor, and the National Stadium of Delhi is also renamed to Major Dhyan Chand stadium.

Every year on National sports day, President of India honors eminent sports personalities with significant awards, including Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards, Dronacharya Awards, and Dhyan Chand Award.

In 2020, the first time in Indian history that five sportspersons will receive the highest sporting honor in the country – Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna for spectacular and outstanding performance in the field of sports over four years.

Cricketer Rohit Sharma, Para Athletics Mariyappan T., Table Tennis Manika Batra, Wrestler Vinesh, and Hockey Rani were being nominated for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.

The selection committee also chose 15 sportspersons for Dhyan Chand Award and eight coaches for Dronacharya Award.

In 2019 Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Fit India Movement‘ and asked everyone to take up sports as it has a direct connection with fitness, and fitness is necessary for a healthy life.

Due to the COVID pandemic as everyone prefers to stay their home this year, the Fit India Movement will run for unique ten days from 29 August to 7 September to commemorate the National Sports Day.
