Odisha-Born Scientist At BARC, Jyotirmayee Mohanty Receives IUPAC Award

The 2023 Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering award was given to Jyotirmayee Mohanty, a scientist from Odisha who works at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai. On August 20, during the opening ceremony of the World Chemistry Congress in The Hague, Netherlands, she received the coveted prize from IUPAC President Javier G-Martinez.

Mohanty is the first Indian woman scientist to win this particular prize. She is the wife of scientist Rasmiranjan Mohanty of Titira under Balikuda block in Jagatsinghpur and the daughter of renowned pediatrician Dr. Baikuntnath Patra of Chauliaganj in Cuttack. Mohanty was given the fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) last year, which is an honor bestowed by the RSC  in the United Kingdom.

IUPAC had on February 11 announced the names of 12 awardees chosen based on excellence in basic or applied research, distinguished accomplishments in teaching or education, or demonstrated leadership or managerial excellence in the chemical sciences. This was done to commemorate International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
