A day after the completion of one year of revocation of Article 370, news from Jammu and Kashmir took the nation by storm. Sajjad Ahmed Khandey, BJP sarpanch, was shot dead by few unidentified terrorists outside his Vessu residence, barely 20mtrs away. He was staying in a secured migrant camp alongside other sarpanchs. He was heading towards his home when he was attacked.
The sarpanch was from Kulgam District. He was rushed to a hospital immediately in Qazigund area with injuries where he was declared dead. No terror outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
But, these attacks are not new in Jammu and Kashmir, ever since article 370 was revoked reports of a specific targeted attack on BJP leaders have increased. There have been several cases of murder and abduction of leaders in the valley.
Two days ago another BJP panch, BJP Panch Arif Ahmad was critically wound up by the terrorists. They opened at him at Akhran Qazigund. He is still under treatment in hospital.
Terrorists abducted Mehrajuddin Malla, vice president of a local municipal committee in Wattergam area of Baramulla district. He was walking on the road when terrorists grabbed him and took him away in a vehicle. But, he returned home safely after police launched a massive haunt.
And just a few days earlier entire valley went into shock when terrorists murdered three members of a family. BJP leader Wasim Bari, his brother Umer Bashir and father Bashir Ahmed were shot dead outside a shop owned by the family. It happened on 8 July.
The attack co-occurs with the fourth death anniversary of Burhan Wani; the Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander. This was marked by a commemorative shutdown in parts of Kashmir. Terrorists tried to convey that they are still active and can hunt down all the obstacles on their way. Right now their targe is the members of ruling BJP.
Jammu and Kashmir are under lockdown ever since article 370 was revoked and the state lost its “special category” status. Several political leaders were put in detention and still now many continue to be in it, including former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
