Preserve Ravenshaw University Act, University Trust Request CM

Due to the splendid heritage of Ravenshaw University, the University Development Trust has requested the State Government to repeal the Ravenshaw University Act- 2005.

Anant Mahapatra, Trust chairman, appealed the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik that the Ravenshaw Unitary University formed in 2005 was one the first in India. The primary purpose of the Act was to revive the past grandeur of the University. In the mid 20th century the institute was one of the foremost Centres of Excellence in the country.

Mahapatra said that when the University formed many other universities came up in Odisha on regional grounds. But Ravenshaw was an anomaly as it was and continues to pan Odisha. He further stated that the history of Ravenshaw will always remain the history of Odisha. The University has always been excellent in all the fields, including politics, art, creativity, literature and sports.

He said “During discussions with the Chief Minister in the years 2000 to 2004, the need for a Special Act for Ravenshaw was featured and he fully acknowledged it. Preserving the Act in no way would hamper the proposed amendments and it is advisable to have separate acts instead of one omnibus law”.

Even Arun Kumar, Higher Education Minister finally spoke on the amendment of the Odisha Universities Act 1989 and simplified that the amended Act will not diminish the autonomy of the universities.
