The Indian National Congress had dysmal performances in the recently concluded state elections in all the five states, i.e Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab. Moreover, Punjab which was considered to be their home has now been overthrown by Aam Aadmi Party making Indian National Congress the weakest political party in the current political scenario of India.
Therefore, after the dysmal results, the party interim chief Sonia Gandhi, did decide to step back and announce her resignation. There was a five long hour of meeting with the principal members of Congress and Sonia Gandhi regarding this matter. However, at the end the chief party members convinced Sonia Gandhi to reverse her decision and not to step down from interim chief position.
Sources said she indicated that she may step back if the CWC wants but the CWC did not endorse it. The CWC reposed faith in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and every single member said that she should continue till organisational elections.
