Atanu Bhowmick has been appointed as Director in-charge in the Steel Authority of India’s (SAIL) Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment proposal of the Ministry of Steel for Atanu Bhowmick recently. The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) has appointed Bhowmick to the post with effect from the date of his assumption of charge until the date of his superannuation, i.e. December 31, 2024, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Bhowmick graduated from the National Institute of Technology (Regional Engineering College) Rourkela. On December 7, 2021, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) recommended him for the position of Director in charge of SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant. His current position is Executive Director (Operations) at the Bokaro Steel Plant of SAIL.
Bhowmick will report to the Chairman of SAIL’s Board of Directors in his new role. He will be responsible for the overall management of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) and the concerned mines for achieving corporate objectives and performance parameters. He will also be responsible for project implementation at the plant or concerned mines and for marketing or sales of products from the plant or concerned mines.
Bhowmik, who is currently posted as the Executive Director of SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant, has earlier worked with the RSP at senior positions. Prior to his posting as ED Bokaro Steel Plant, Bhowmik was the General Manager, of Blast Furnace at RSP.
The PESB had interviewed eight candidates (including Bhowmik) for the post of RSP’s Director in-charge post. Among the interviewees were 6 EDs of SAIL, and GM-ranked officers of the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited and MECON Limited.
During 29 years of service, he learned the intricacies of iron-making and rose to the position of Chief General Manager in 2016. Following that, Shri Bhowmick headed RSP’s Services Department, then its Projects Department. He was appointed Executive Director (Works) in Bokaro Steel Plant in October 2019. With his rich experience and expertise. As a result of Shri Bhowmick’s leadership, Bokaro Steel Plant has unleashed a cultural transformation that has resulted in a more harmonious working environment, robust operational discipline, strategic technological interventions, and higher productivity and profitability.
A 1981 Batch distinguished alumnus of Saint Paul’s School, Rourkela, Mr Bhowmick believes that discipline, empathy and thirst for knowledge are the keys to success that have been inculcated in students by his alma mater.
