Tata Steel today put India on the global decarburisation and sustainability map by awarding the coveted Responsible Steel Certification to three of its production facilities in Jamshedpur. The Steel Works, Tubes Division, and Cold Rolling Mill (Bara) of the Company in Jamshedpur have joined an exclusive group of steel producing sites worldwide to receive the Responsible Steel Certification, which also includes some of the world’s most renowned steel manufacturers.

Responsible Steel is the steel industry’s first global multi-stakeholder standard and certification initiative, collaborating with steel producers, consumers, and intermediaries to build a sustainable steel industry by addressing pressing issues such as climate change, diversity, and human rights, among others.

“This is a historic moment for Tata Steel and an important step in our sustainability journey,” said T. V. Narendran, CEO and MD of Tata Steel. Globally, the steel industry is at a crossroads, and the larger implications of how we produce and consume steel must be addressed immediately. From the time Tata Steel began producing steel in Jamshedpur in 1912, this has been a critical part of our journey. We are honored to have received Responsible Steel Certification for three of our facilities and will work to achieve this recognition for all of our manufacturing facilities. “I would like to thank the Responsible Steel team, the auditors, the assurance panel, and the Tata Steel team for their efforts in making this possible.”

“We warmly congratulate Tata Steel on this incredible achievement,” said Annie Heaton, CEO of Responsible Steel. Tata has shown vision, commitment, and investment in achieving Responsible Steel certification for its Jamshedpur site, the first Tata Steel site to do so and the first Responsible Steel certification in India. It’s not enough to just focus on lowering carbon emissions. Certified sites must also ensure that they are fully aligned with the Standard’s other sustainability objectives, such as good water stewardship, creating a healthy and safe workplace, protecting labour rights, and engaging with local communities and other stakeholders. This is a watershed moment for Tata Steel and everyone involved.”
