PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the project of 2300 km long submarine office on 30th of December 2018 at Port Blair. PM Modi inaugurated submarine optical fibre cable which connects Chennai and port Blair via video conferencing.
Earlier PM has said that inauguration of the optical fibre cable in Andaman and Nicobar Islands will ensure high-speed broadband connectivity, fast mobile and landline telecom services which would ultimately boost the local economy.
The inaugurated submarine OFC link with delivering bandwidth of 2×200 Gigabytes per second between Chennai and Port Blair, and 2×100 (Gbps) between port Blair and other islands.
It is said that provision of reliable, robust, and high-speed broadband telecom services in these islands would be a recognizable achievement from the viewpoint of consumers, as well as for strategic and governance reasons.
4G mobile services which have been constrained due to limited backhaul of bandwidth which was used to provide via satellite would also see a significant improvement.
The OFC that has been extended 2300 km has been laid at the cost of 1224 crore, and the project has been appropriately completed in time.
When I visited Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 2018, people complained about poor internet. A 2300 kms long submarine cable inaugurated today changes that! In quick time and challenging geographies, the cable is all set to transform lives. Kudos to those who worked on this! pic.twitter.com/XK7MgXyAty

He also mentioned the proposal of building a transhipment at the port in Great Nicobar island at an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore.
The date of starting the projects has not been assigned, but it is expected to have the first phase of this project operational in the next 4-5 years.
And it is expected that once this got installed, this would enable big ships to dock down there.
Tourists visiting Andaman and Nicobar Islands as well as residents can now proceed for the high-speed net and mobile connectivity.
