Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC)(25 years in operations, OHPC meets 40% of peak power demand), a gold-rated state government-owned PSU achieved a rare milestone. It completed 25 years in commercial operations.
Celebrating 25th Foundation Day(25 years in operations, OHPC meets 40% of peak power demand) marked a watershed moment for OHPC. It was incorporated as a corporate entity on April 21, 1995. OHPC was entrusted with the ownership of all hydropower assets of the erstwhile Orissa State Electricity Board (OSEB) & Odisha government.
OHPC(25 years in operations, OHPC meets 40% of peak power demand) now operates six power stations located across the state- Hirakud, Chiplima, Balimela, Rengali, Upper Indravati, Upper Kolab and one powerHouse as a joint project with APGENCO of the Andhra Pradesh government at Machkund with a total installed capacity of 2063.50 MW.
OHPC(25 years in operations, OHPC meets 40% of peak power demand) at present contributes about 20 per cent of the state’s electricity demand & about 40 per cent of the peak demand of the state.
OHPC provides power at the cheapest rate in the country and is regularly paying dividends to the government exchequer. Recently, the Corporation paid Rs 31.58 crore to the state government towards Dividend for FY 2018-19.
Looking ahead to the new decade keeping in view the substantial increase of industrial, commercial & domestic demand due to industrial and rural electrification, OHPC(25 years in operations, OHPC meets 40% of peak power demand) is pushing the momentum to achieve new heights to ensure a higher share of hydropower in the energy mix with proposed plans for Construction of Upper Indravati Pump Storage Project (600MW), Balimela Pump Storage Project (500MW) and Upper Kolab PSP (320MW); Construction of Kharag HEP (63MW), Salki HEP.
Many of the generating units of different power stations of OHPC were commissioned way back in the 50s, 60s and 70s and have already outlived their useful service life of 35 years.
OHPC(25 years in operations, OHPC meets 40% of peak power demand) has been working continuously to renovate and modernize the old units, following state-of-the-art technology, for extension of life with increased reliability, better operability, efficiency and availability.
OHPC has completed the Renovation, Modernization, Up-rating & Life Extension (R, MU &LE) of four units of Hirakud and two units of Chipilima Hydro-electric project. Further, Six generating units of Balimela HEP, two units of Hirakud and one unit of Chipilima are now under R. M &U.
OHPC in the recent past has ventured into the generation of energy from renewable sources like solar, small hydro, pump storage projects etc. on its own and through its subsidiaries. It has also diversified into the field of thermal power generation and coal production by way of JVs with some leading State Corporations.
OHPC(25 years in operations, OHPC meets 40% of peak power demand) is always committed to the care of the people of the state by undertaking various CSR activities. OHPC has recently extended its support to the state government by providing necessary financial assistance for setting two COVID-19 Hospitals in the state. The Hospital at Gajapati has 110 beds while that at Balasore has 120 beds.
Although the Corporation is regularly undertaking various CSR activities near to its operational units across the state, this particular contribution is a record CSR support by OHPC since its inception.
The said Hospitals have become functional now. The Corporation’s plan of holding an International Conference on Renewable Energy for sustainable development on 22nd and 23rd of April, 2020 had to be deferred due to the unprecedented pandemic COVID-19 across the globe.
On the occasion of the Silver Jubilee year of OHPC, Bishnupada Sethi, IAS, Principal Secretary to Govt, department of energy & CMD, OHPC extended his heartiest felicitations to all the present and past Directors, employees and policymakers for their great efforts, dedication and discipline for which OHPC has become one of the leading profitable organisations in the State.
