South superstar Rajinikanth will be felicitated with the 51st Dadasaheb Phalke Award which is termed as the highest award in the Indian cinema as informed by the Union Minister Prakash Javadekar.
In the official Twitter account, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar quoted- “Happy to announce #Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema Rajnikant Ji. His contribution as actor, producer, and screenwriter has been iconic.”
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award -2019 should have been announced last year but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic along with the National Film Awards for 2019. The Jury made the selections were versatile singer Asha Bhosle and Shankar Mahadevan along with actors Mohanlal, Biswajeet, and filmmaker Subhash Ghai. And the award is comprised of a Golden Lotus and a cash prize of ₹10 lakh.
Rajinikanth who is at 70, made his debut in the 1975 Tamil movie Apoorva Ragangal and later delivered back-to-back superhit movies like Billu, Muthu, Baashha, Sivaji, and Enthiran. He has worked on more than 160 films and was felicitated with Padma Bhushan in 2000 along with Padma Vibhushan in 2016 by the Indian Government. For his immense contribution to the Indian cinema and being a south Indian icon, he received several state and international awards.
Earlier, Rajinikanth was expected to enter the political career in January 2021 but later announced his decision not to launch into a political party. He successfully completed his 45 years in the film industry in August last year, will soon resume shooting for the upcoming Tamil film Annaatthe.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award -2019 is named after the father of Indian cinema, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, and was instituted in 1969. The award is conferred by the government for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema.
