A Lifetime Dedicated to Women’s Health & Motherhood: Dr. Monu Pattanayak

Director, Shanti Memorial Hospital & IVF Centre, Rourkela, Odisha

Feature: Dr. Monu Pattanayak has been at the forefront of advancing women’s healthcare in Odisha for more than three decades. Recognized as a pioneer in reproductive medicine, gynae-endoscopy, and invasive fetal procedures, his contributions have not only transformed clinical practices in the state but also placed Odisha firmly on India’s medical innovation map. With a career shaped by rigorous training at premier institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and enriched by global exposure across leading centres in London, Paris, San Francisco, Copenhagen, Singapore, and beyond, Dr. Pattanayak exemplifies the blend of world-class expertise and a deep commitment to his home state.

From his early medical training in India’s most prestigious institutions to advanced fellowships abroad, Dr. Pattanayak charted his journey with determination and purpose. Choosing one of the most challenging disciplines—Obstetrics and Gynaecology—he saw the field not merely as a career, but as a calling to ensure that women received dignity, care, and access to the latest medical innovations.

His professional achievements reflect this vision. Armed with an M.D. from AIIMS, FICOG, MNAMS, MRCOG, and a European Diploma in Hysteroscopy & Laparoscopy, he went on to gain invaluable experience at Maulana Azad Medical College and AIIMS. His international training as a Senior House Officer at Greenwich Hospital, London, and as a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, further honed his expertise and prepared him to push boundaries in the field back home.

That preparation bore fruit in 1999 when he introduced In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) to Odisha, leading to the birth of the state’s very first test tube baby. For couples who had long lost hope of becoming parents, this breakthrough was life-changing. It marked not just a medical milestone, but a cultural and emotional one—transforming the way infertility was perceived and treated in the state.

As Director of Shanti Memorial Hospital and IVF Centre in Rourkela, Dr. Pattanayak has continued to set benchmarks in women’s healthcare. The hospital has become a trusted destination for advanced gynae-laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and fetal medicine, serving patients from across Odisha and beyond. During the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, he once again rose to the occasion. By establishing Shanti COVID Hospital, he provided critical care to thousands in Sundargarh district, one of Odisha’s worst-hit regions, earning both public gratitude and official recognition from the state government.

While his training and exposure span global centres of excellence—from New York to Singapore, Paris to Australia—Dr. Pattanayak’s commitment has always been to Odisha. By bringing international expertise to his home state, he ensured that patients no longer had to travel to distant metros for advanced reproductive care. Instead, they could access world-class treatment in their own backyard, delivered with the reassurance of local trust.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Pattanayak has also made lasting contributions to academia and professional medicine. He has presented scientific papers at leading forums, delivered keynote lectures and orations at national and international platforms, and has been an active member of prestigious associations including FOGSI, ISAR, ESHRE, FIGO, AAGL, and the PCOS Society of India. His pathbreaking work has been recognized with honors from FOGSI, ISAR, IMA, Rotary International, and the Government of Odisha.

Yet for Dr. Pattanayak, recognition and awards have never been the goal. His true measure of success lies in the families he has helped complete, the women whose health he has safeguarded, and the lives that have been enriched through his efforts. His career is a reminder that medicine is not only about science and technology but also about empathy, perseverance, and the courage to make the impossible possible.

By bringing the first test tube baby to Odisha, introducing advanced gynae-endoscopy, and tirelessly advocating for women’s health, Dr. Monu Pattanayak has built a legacy that will continue to inspire both patients and future generations of doctors. His story is not only about medical firsts, but about the enduring power of compassion and vision in transforming healthcare.
