Bollywood Actor Randeep Hooda has been removed as the ambassador of the Convention for the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), United Nation’s environmental treaty, following a controversy over his derogatory comments against Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati.
An old video went viral on all social media account where the actor is joking about Mayawati while speaking at a media event in 2012. After the video went viral many netizens stated that his statements were “casteist and sexist”.
The CMS Secretariat stated that it had come to know of that video clip recently and found the comments made by Hooda to be offensive. The statements did not reflect the values of the CMS Secretariat or the United Nations.
The CMS Secretariat further stated in the statement that the organization wasn’t aware of the 2012 video in February 2020, when Hooda was appointed as a CMS Ambassador for Migratory Species.
The Bollywood actor had been nominated as an ambassador along with Australian explorer and environmentalist Sacha Dench, and British biologist Ian Redmond OBE.
The 43-second-clip from an event organised by a media house in 2012 resurfaced when a Twitter user shared it. The video has Mr Hooda cracking a joke and then laughing along with the audience.
The video created a stir in all social media sites where several users called out the casteist and sexist nature of the joke and many demanded an apology from the actor while hostages like #ArrestRandeepHooda trended on Twitter.
