The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested a boosted version of Akash Missile, Akash Prime, from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur on September 27.
According to the statement by DRDO, the missile interrupted and destroyed an unmanned aerial target impersonating enemy aircraft, in its maiden flight test after improvements.
As per the official reports Akash Prime is equipped with a homegrown RF seeker which imparts an improved accuracy while intercepting targets in various weather conditions. The enhanced version of the Akash Missile system, Akash Prime is equipped with a homegrown RF seeker which imparts an improved accuracy while intercepting targets in various weather conditions, including, under a low-temperature environment in high altitude operational areas such as the northern and northeastern frontiers.
DRDO statement further added that the modified ground system of the existing Akash weapon system has been used for the current flight test and the range stations of ITR comprising of Radars, EOTS and Telemetry stations monitored the missile trajectory and flight parameters.
