The depression over the Bay of Bengal will intensify into a cyclone Asani in the next few hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD)informed in that the depression is predicted to move “northwards along and off Andaman and Nicobar Islands”.
The tweet quoted – “The Depression over southeast BoB near latitude 10.9°N & longitude 93.2°E, about 200 km north-northeast of Car Nicobar(Nicobar Islands), 100 km south-southeast of Port Blair(Andaman Islands). To intensify into a deep depression in next 12 hrs and into a cyclonic storm in next 12 hrs.”
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra informed that the cyclone will not make landfall in the Andaman Islands. The weather system would move nearly northward along and off the Andaman Islands towards Myanmar and adjoining the south Bangladesh coast.
According to IMD predictions, light to moderate rainfall/thundershower at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and isolated extremely heavy rainfall are very likely over the Andaman Islands. Around 150 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have reportedly been deployed and are ready at different locations.
