‘Dhenkanal Magji’ gets GI tag

The famous Sweet of Dhenkanal ‘Magji’ has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. In 2020 it was applied for GI tag before the Geographical Indications Registry based at Chennai. It was applied by Dhenkanal Sweets Association and was facilitated by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (OUAT) Dhenkanal.

Hrushikesh Sahoo, a Magji Confectioner from Sadangi, Dhenkanal said, “I am very much happy and joyful after I came to know that Magji got the GI tag, my Grandfather was preparing this, then my father and now I am making it.”

Krishna Sahoo, a local of Dhenkanal said, ” I got to know from news that Magji got the GI tag and immediately I went to Sadangi with my friends to have Magji, also I brought some for my parents.”

‘Magji’ is made from Buffalo milk cheese, sugar and cardamom powder.

The sweet is made and sold by many confectioners in Mandar, Sadangi, Gondia, Bhuban, Kashipur, Bidharpur, Deogaon, and Dhenkanal Town.

Dr. Bimalendu Mohanty of Krishi Vigyan Kendra ( OUAT), Dhenkanal said, ” I am very much happy that Dhenkanal Magji got the GI tag, I express my sincere thanks and best wishes to the people of Dhenkanal, intellectuals, sweet confectioners, sweet shop owners. This sweet is very old and prepared from Buffalo milk cheese, sugar and cardamom. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra made a detailed report on it and presented it to the GI Registry Authority.”
