Dr. Tirupati Panigrahi’s life story is a remarkable journey of resilience, vision, and compassion. Born into a modest family, he faced the harsh realities of life at an early age. Unable to pursue formal education beyond the seventh grade due to financial difficulties, his dreams seemed unattainable. Yet, through sheer determination and an unyielding spirit, he rose above adversity to become one of Odisha’s most revered philanthropists and visionaries. His life serves as a shining example of how obstacles can become stepping stones to greatness.
Deprived of traditional academic opportunities, Dr. Panigrahi turned life into his teacher. His early years were a relentless struggle—working in a hotel, bathing at railway platforms, and sleeping under tables. These hardships were not just challenges but lessons that shaped his worldview and ignited a deep desire to ensure others, especially those from marginalized communities, could access education and opportunities.
In 1992, driven by a strong will to uplift the underprivileged, Dr. Panigrahi founded his first educational institution, a +2 college in Guma, named after his mother. Starting with 700 students, primarily from tribal and Dalit communities, the college became the beginning of a transformative journey. His mission was not only to provide education but also to empower every child, regardless of background, to build a brighter future. This vision continues to inspire and impact countless lives today.
From a single college, Dr. Panigrahi’s vision expanded into what is today the Hi-Tech Group of Institutions, Eastern India’s largest educational network. This monumental achievement includes 48 institutions, comprising:

Schools, MBA programs, nursing colleges, and 34 other institutions
Under his leadership, these institutions have become beacons of hope for thousands of students, particularly those living below the poverty line. By offering free education to the underprivileged, Dr. Panigrahi has transformed the lives of countless young individuals, giving them the tools to break free from the cycle of poverty.
Education was only the beginning. Recognizing the pressing need for accessible healthcare, Dr. Panigrahi extended his philanthropic vision into the medical field. The Hi-Tech Hospital, under his leadership, is now synonymous with cutting-edge technology, world-class surgeons, and compassionate care. Guided by the philosophy of “health first, payment later,” the hospital has become a lifeline for thousands of patients, especially in rural and underserved areas.
The hospital’s mobile medical units deliver essential healthcare services to the doorsteps of rural communities, addressing everything from eye care to dental health. Over 15,000 spectacles have been distributed to the needy, and numerous patients have received free treatment through the Poor Patient Treatment Fund, an initiative funded entirely by Dr. Panigrahi himself.
His commitment to healthcare extends to education, with reserved seats and scholarships for children from poor families in medical programs. These initiatives ensure that healthcare is not just a privilege but a right, accessible to all, irrespective of their financial standing.
Dr. Panigrahi’s vision goes beyond education and healthcare. His institutions have become hubs of empowerment, providing employment to thousands, including many women. From skilled professionals to unskilled workers, his initiatives have uplifted entire communities, driving economic and social development.
He has also supported young entrepreneurs with financial aid for startups, fostering innovation and self-reliance. By addressing key issues like employment and education, Dr. Panigrahi has become a transformative force in Odisha.
His dedication to societal upliftment has earned him numerous accolades, including three honorary doctorates. What sets him apart is his empathy, shaped by his own experience with poverty. Dr. Panigrahi’s contributions—education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, and entrepreneurship—have left an indelible mark on society.
Dr. Panigrahi’s vision for development is shared by his son, Rupesh Kumar Panigrahi, MLA of Paralakhemundi. Together, they are dedicated to advancing Odisha’s growth and providing affordable services across sectors. Whether in education, healthcare, or public service, their mission is to create opportunities for the middle and lower-middle classes, ensuring that no one is left behind.
Dr. Panigrahi’s life exemplifies resilience and the power of the human spirit. His message to the youth is simple yet profound: dream big, work hard, and give back to society.
