Ajitav Mallik, a film producer, was detained by Twin City Police Wednesday on suspicion of defrauding an assistant professor at Ravenshaw University in Cuttack of Rs 85 lakh on the pretence of selling her a duplex. In 2020, the victim purchased a duplex at Kolathia in the city for Rs 1 crore by paying Mallik the sum over several instalments. Mallik, however, cut off communication and refused to give the woman the property.
She said that in addition to being compelled to sell her gold jewellery, she had been threatened with severe repercussions. She complained to the Khandagiri police about him, and they are related. They also conned others, then used the money to make a movie and start a restaurant in Hyderabad. Arundhati, an Odia movie from 2021, was both produced and acted in by Ajitav.
