Gadar 2, Day 3: Sunny Deol film collects a whopping Rs 135 cr in opening weekend, is second highest earner of 2023

Gadar 2 is unstoppable at the box office and the Sunny Deol-led juggernaut showed no sign of stopping on its third day. The Anil Sharma directorial had a smashing Sunday, with collections estimated at Rs 52 cr, reported industry tracker Sacnilk. This is the highest day for Gadar 2 so far after its equally landmark start of Rs 40 cr followed by Saturday, where the film earned Rs 43 cr.
With Sunday’s big push in collections, Gadar 2’s weekend collection total now stands at Rs 135 cr. According to trade, the film will now aim to record a steady Monday collection and go on an overdrive again on Tuesday, which is Independence Day. The holiday push will ensure Gadar 2 cruises past Rs 200 cr with ease.

To put things in perspective, Shah Rukh Khan’s blockbuster Pathaan–which released on January 25, Wednesday– had its three-day collections around Rs 161 cr (Hindi), with its second day recording the highest ever single day collection of Rs 68 cr nett on account of Republic Day. In its five-day extended weekend, Pathaan had earned Rs 271 cr.
Gadar 2 has done phenomenal business despite a clash with Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2, which meant limited showcasing, especially at multiplexes. Gadar 2 has already emerged as Sunny Deol’s biggest hit in his 40-year career. The 65-year-old actor started his career with Betaab (1983) and Gadar (2001) was earlier his highest-earning blockbuster.

The actor said about Gadar 2’s box office performance, “I am indeed very happy. When we did the second part of Gadar, we never knew it would be so loved by the audience. Two whole generations have gone by since we did the first Gadar. And still, people are as excited as they were the first time. I am amazed and very, very happy. We need some hits to keep the film industry on its feet.”
Seeing unprecedented demand for Gadar 2, several exhibitors added new shows, with screenings happening after midnight and early in the morning. As Bollywood Hungama reported, “The film is facing capacity issues as it had to share screens with OMG 2. Moviegoers, meanwhile, are not ready to wait till weekdays or next week to watch Gadar 2. They want to watch the film immediately and hence, expect many more cinemas to increase shows and thus create history.”

Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar 2 also stars Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma and has the late Amrish Puri recreated via CGI. A sequel to the 2001 hit, it is set in the 1970s and has Tara Singh (played by Sunny) to Pakistan as he tries to rescue his son.
