Hirakud Dam authorities have opened three more sluice gates of the heavy rain locks in the upper catchment area for the release of excess flood water from the reservoir. Flood water is currently drained from eight gates in the dam reservoir.
Before, on July 18, dam authorities opened seven locks to release the first flood of the season.
There are a total of 64 sluice gates to discharge the floodwater, 24 on the right side and 40 on the left side of the dam. Apart from that, there are 34 ridge gates, 13 on the right and 21 on the left, which can drain 16,238 cubic meters of water.
