AI Opens a New Advertising Frontier

New Delhi: The battle for digital advertising attention may be entering an entirely new phase. After years dominated by search engines and social-media platforms, marketers in India are beginning to explore advertising opportunities within ChatGPT, signalling how generative AI could eventually emerge as another channel in the digital marketing ecosystem.

Industry executives cited by Moneycontrol say advertisers are testing the emerging format, although relatively high pricing and limited inventory mean brands are currently approaching the opportunity experimentally rather than moving significant portions of their advertising budgets.

For marketers, the development raises a bigger question: Could AI conversations become the next valuable point of contact between brands and consumers?

From Search to Conversation

Digital advertising has traditionally revolved around two powerful consumer behaviours — searching and scrolling.

Google built an enormous advertising ecosystem around search intent, while Meta transformed social feeds into sophisticated advertising environments. Generative AI introduces another behaviour: conversation.

Consumers increasingly use AI assistants to research products, understand complex topics, compare options and explore ideas. That makes conversational interfaces potentially valuable territory for marketers looking to reach audiences during the discovery process.

However, advertising within an AI environment presents a fundamentally different challenge. Users expect AI responses to be useful and trustworthy, meaning any commercial experience needs a clear distinction between organic answers and sponsored placements.

Indian Marketers Test the Opportunity

The current phase appears to be one of experimentation.

According to the report, premium pricing and limited advertising slots are among the factors influencing how Indian marketers evaluate ChatGPT advertising. Rather than immediately redirecting major budgets from established platforms, brands and agencies are assessing the potential reach, engagement and commercial value of the new format.

That cautious approach is understandable. Google and Meta offer enormous scale, mature measurement systems and years of advertiser data. AI advertising, by comparison, remains an emerging category.

But being early could also provide brands with an opportunity to understand consumer behaviour in conversational environments before the channel becomes more established.

Why This Matters for Brands

The development could represent something larger than the arrival of another advertising platform.

Generative AI is beginning to influence the consumer discovery journey itself. Instead of opening multiple websites or scrolling through dozens of posts, a consumer can ask an AI assistant a detailed question and receive information within a single conversation.

For marketers, that potentially changes where brand discovery happens.

The future digital funnel could increasingly involve a combination of Search + Social + AI, requiring brands to think not only about search-engine optimisation and social-media visibility, but also about how their information is represented across AI-driven discovery environments.

Trust Will Be the Critical Currency

Advertising inside conversational AI also brings an important responsibility: commercial content must remain clearly distinguishable from the assistant’s normal responses.

If consumers cannot easily understand when something is sponsored, trust in the overall experience could be affected. Transparency, relevance and user experience will therefore be important considerations as conversational advertising develops.

The brands that succeed may not necessarily be those that simply spend the most, but those that understand how to participate in AI-powered discovery without disrupting the usefulness consumers expect from these platforms.

Beyond Google & Meta?

Google and Meta are unlikely to lose their advertising dominance overnight. Their reach, targeting infrastructure and established advertiser ecosystems remain formidable.

Instead, conversational AI could emerge as an additional layer in the digital marketing mix.

Just as brands once had to adapt from print to digital, desktop to mobile and search to social media, the rise of generative AI could create another significant transition.

For Indian marketers, the experimentation has begun.

The next battle for consumer attention may not happen only on a search page or social feed — it could happen inside a conversation.
