HT veteran comes back after a year away from journalism to head the newsroom starting October 1, with full charge from mid-November

  • Kunal Pradhan will take over as Editor-in-Chief of Hindustan Times, succeeding Sukumar Ranganathan, who is moving on from the HT Media Group following this year’s Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, ending his more than two-decade association with the organisation.
  •  Pradhan will join HT Media on October 1, 2026 as Acting Editor-in-Chief and will take over the role in mid-November.
  • Ranganathan was one of the founding editors of Mint and later became Editor-in-Chief of Hindustan Times, having strengthened the group’s journalism through a period of considerable industry change.
  • Ranganathan called Pradhan “one of my fellow travellers at HT for most of my stint,” saying he was delighted Pradhan is “returning to take over as head of the newsroom.”
  • Pradhan previously held senior editorial roles at HT, including Managing Editor, and his nearly three-decade career includes stints at India Today, The Indian Express, Mumbai Mirror and Reuters.
  • Notably, Pradhan had stepped down as Managing Editor of Hindustan Times in March 2025 after 28 years in journalism, saying at the time he wanted “to move on, focus on other interests and to see if I can give something back.”
  •  On his appointment, Pradhan said Hindustan Times is “a newsroom I know well and an institution I care deeply about,” calling the return “both a privilege and a responsibility.”
