Odisha Charts Ambitious Aviation Growth Plan

The 3rd High Power Committee (HPC) meeting on aviation-related issues was conducted as a crucial step to fortify Odisha’s aviation infrastructure and conform with the vision of Viksit Odisha. Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja presided over the HPC meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan. The state’s dedication to improving regional connections, updating airport infrastructure, and cultivating strategic alliances to support the aviation industry was emphasized throughout the discussions. The construction of Puri’s Shree Jagannath International Airport (SJIA) was a major priority.

Land acquisition and forest clearing concerns were resolved, and the improvement of important airports, such as Jeypore, Amarda Road, and Utkela, was given first priority. As the nodal agency, the Works Department was charged with accelerating these advancements. The updated Small Aircraft Scheme (SAS), which focuses on reasonably priced travel alternatives, was also discussed as a way to improve air connection between far-flung places like Jeypore, Malkangiri, and Jharsuguda. Following a discussion of the plans for a new greenfield airport in Paradip, guidelines for feasibility studies and land identification were established.

The extension of financial support through Viability Gap Funding (VGF) for airline operators like M/s IndiGo, Alliance Air, and IndiaOne Air to increase domestic and international air traffic from Odisha was also discussed by Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary, Commerce and Transport Department, Government of Odisha. One of the most important steps in developing a competent aviation workforce was the establishment of the Aviation Security Training Institute (ASTI) in Chandaka. The Directorate of Aviation’s reorganization was also examined, with suggestions for improved staff and contemporary infrastructure to accommodate Odisha’s expanding aviation industry.

In his speech to the committee, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja underlined how important aviation is to boosting connectivity, tourism, and economic growth in an empowered Odisha.

“Odisha is fast emerging as an aviation hub with world-class infrastructure, enhanced air connectivity, and forward-thinking policies. These developments are pivotal in realizing the vision of Viksit Odisha,” he stated.
