The Odisha Medical and Engineering colleges will have a reservation of 15% seats for the government school and college students as announced by the Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik.
As per earlier reports, the Odisha Government had proposed the reservation supported by the opposition in the state and the 15 per cent reservation quota is applicable for all the state-run medical and engineering colleges.
The report further informs that according to the Skill Development and Technical Education Department the Government High School students are in a disadvantage position as compared to the private schools while appearing for examinations like NEET and JEE.
Under the chairmanship of Justice AK Mishra who is a retired judge of Orissa High Court, the Odisha Government had constituted a high power committee on 8th January to make necessary recommendations regarding the reservation of seats for government high school students in engineering and medical courses in Odisha.
As per the recommendations of the Committee, the Odisha Government has directed 15% of seats in medical and engineering colleges of the state shall be reserved for students who have passed the 10th Board Examination under the Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha, and also have passed 12th Board Examination under Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), from any Odisha government higher secondary school/government junior college and such reservations shall be horizontal covering all vertical reservations as well as the unreserved group.
The Government High School also includes the aided high schools, higher secondary schools, junior colleges of the state as defined in the Odisha Education Act, 1969 while medical courses concerning a medical college include MBBS, BDS, BHMS, BAMS, BSMS and BUMS and the engineering courses concerning an engineering college includes B.Tech, B.E. and B.Arch.
Even the eligible students shall also be entitled to compete for the unreserved seats and in case, an adequate number of such eligible students is not available for seats so set apart, such unfilled seats shall be filled up by the other students of respective category.
