The horrific scenes and their piercing cries rocked the sports community. Only a few kilometers from the location where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was opening the new Parliament building in the nation’s capital on Sunday morning, Olympic and world medalists were pulled and held by Delhi police.
The best wrestlers in the nation, including Olympic bronze medalists from Rio and Tokyo, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and two-time World Championships medalist Vinesh Phogat, attempted to march toward the new Parliament to organize a “Mahila Samman Mahapanchayat” when they were stopped in their tracks and taken forcibly to different locations from Jantar Mantar where they had set up their tents for the protest that lasted until Day 36. While removing Sakshi, Vinesh, and Sangeeta Phogat, there was quite a disturbance.
The protesting wrestlers were in no mood to withdraw when it all began. In an effort to get closer to the new Parliament, they broke through the security perimeter. According to reliable government sources, the Delhi police will file an FIR under the appropriate provisions of the Indian Penal Code against the wrestlers for allegedly causing a disturbance near Jantar Mantar.
The wrestlers’ tents were also demolished by the Delhi police after they restarted their protest on April 23. They had been calling for the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) head Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who had been suspended from his position. The area was also cleared of the wrestlers’ other possessions, including cots, beds, coolers, and fans.
The wrestlers claimed via social media posts that the protest would continue even though it appeared that the action was intended to put an end to the continuing sit-in protest. “Our demonstration is still ongoing. We shall begin our “satyagraha” at Jantar Mantar as soon as we are freed from police custody. This nation will now see a women’s wrestling satyagraha, not tyranny, Sakshi and Sangeeta Phogat, Bajrang’s wife, tweeted.
