Despite government efforts since 2015 to encourage the use of greener cars, just 0.8% of all vehicles registered in the nation are electric. Approximately 34 crore automobiles were registered with the road transport ministry’s e-vahan portal as of July 14, 2023, but only over 27 lakh of those were registered as electrical vehicles, according to official statistics.
Up to July 14, there were 34,00,08,524 cars registered with the transport ministry. Only 27,44,019 of these were registered as electric cars. In other words, the proportion of electric vehicles among all registered vehicles in the nation is barely 0.8%. Also, only Delhi leads all Indian states in terms of highest number of electric vehicles registered. Out of the total 84,57,200 vehicles registered in Delhi, 2,29,305 or 2.71 per cent vehicles are electric.
It’s interesting to note that, aside from Delhi, Assam and Tripura are the only two other states, according to statistics from the transport ministry, that have more than 2% of their registered cars be electric vehicles. Tripura has registered 2.02% of its total vehicle registrations as electric cars, compared to Assam’s 2.16 % of the state’s total vehicle registrations. Only 8,738 public charging stations were in use as of June 30, 2023, compared to the over 27 lakh electric vehicles that were registered in the nation as of July 14, 2023.
In order to promote the use of electric vehicles in the country, government had introduced the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) scheme in 2015 on pan India basis. Presently, phase-II of FAME India scheme is being implemented for a period of five years from April 1, 2019 with a total budgetary support of Rs 10,000 crores.
