On Friday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered further ex-gratia payments for individuals who perished or were injured in the Balasore railway catastrophe. This is in addition to the compensation that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared.
“The next-of-kin of each person killed in the railway accident in Odisha would get an ex-gratia payment from PMNRF of Rs 2 lakh. Modi tweeted that the injured will receive Rs 50,000.
This evening in Balasore, Odisha, an express train collided with the wrecked carriages of another train, resulting in at least 50 fatalities and 150 injuries. According to authorities, there may be more casualties as many are believed to be stranded.
Vaishnaw had already declared an ex-gratia award of Rs 10 lakh for those who died, Rs 2 lakh for those who sustained severe injuries, and Rs 50,000 for those who just had minor wounds.
