Severe Heat Wave Likely In Odisha From Apr 25

With the gusting wind speed going to remain at around 40-45 kmph, the state will face intense heatwave in the coming days. Model predictions hint heatwave gripping largely some places in the State in the coming week.

According to the model data of GEFS(Global Ensemble Forecast System), Hailstorm probability forecast for districts like Mayurbhanj-Keonjhar, Malkangiri-Gajapati on April 21. Districts like Puri, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Khordha, indcluding Bhubaneswar, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Sundargarh and Bolangir will have Lightning-cum-thunderstorm on April 20.

As per the NCEP and ECMWF forecast, the wind will change direction from the coming Sunday. The wind direction and speed will take a turn. While wind will start blowing from the southeast in the coastal region, the direction in the western and northern will be from the north-northwest. Moreover, from over 22kmph wind speed in the coastal region currently, the models predict the wind speed slowing down to around12kmph.

As a consequence, the mercury over the whole landscape of the State will shoot up from Sunday. And the aggregate will pinch the State hard from April 26-29.  The forecasts show some places in Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Angul recording around 45 deg C between Apr 25-29. The model data shows intense heatwave-like conditions prevailing in the State during the week of April 28-May 4. There is a forecast of easing of the heatwave in the State during the week of May 5-11. However, coastal places like Gopalpur, Paradip, Dhamra etc will stay immune from the mercury fury.

The forecasts by IMD and NCEP show that Bhubaneswar and Cuttack will record over 40 deg C from April 24 to April 29.

Further the prediction of CGEPS-IGPP shows the probability of cyclonic circulation in the south Andaman seas between Apr 21and 27. But the parameters give no clue about the system’s intensification. No cyclone genesis in the Bay of Bengal or Andaman seas till May 11.
