On Friday, the Supreme Court granted parole to rights activist Teesta Setalvad in connection with the FIR for allegedly fabricating evidence in the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The activist was arrested on June 25 by the Gujarat Police Anti-Terrorism Branch.
The Gujarat High Court has been asked to issue a final bail plea, but Setalvad will be released in the meantime, the Supreme Court said, she will be released by Saturday without claiming local bail.
The order was given by the bench of CJI Uday Umesh Lalit and Hudges S Ravindra Bhat and Sudhanshu Dhulia.
The apex court further ordered Setalvad to hand over her passport and cooperate with her investigation. It has clarified that the order was issued for the purpose of reconsidering her bail pending an appeal against her bail in the High Court and did not express the merits of the case.
