Supreme Court rejected the appealed for protection against arrest by the makers and actor of Amazon Prime Web Series’ Tandav’. The makers of the web series face criminal cases and have been accused of hurting religious sentiments” under sections 153A and 295 of the Indian Penal Code, “promoting religious enmity” and “defiling a place of worship.
Multiple FIRs against the series’ director, producer, writer, actors and Amazon India Originals’ head Aparna Purohit, have been filed in six states. At least three cases have been lodged in Uttar Pradesh against the makers of the series, alleging inappropriate depiction of UP Police personnel and deities and the negative portrayal of a character playing the prime minister’s role. Similar cases have been lodged in other states including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar, Delhi and Chandigarh.
The case was heard by a bench of justices Ashok Bhushan, RS Reddy and MR Shah where they said- “Your right to freedom of speech is not absolute. You cannot play the role of character that hurts the sentiments of a community.”
Gauahar Khan, who is also a part of the controversial web series, reacted to the refusal to grant them protection from arrest by the Supreme Court. She tweeted along with three faces with monocle’s emojis in her official Twitter handle-“Excellent. Next people playing murderers on screen might be tried for the same. After all, they read the script.”
Actress Konkona Sensharma also reacted to the Supreme Court’s refusal and Twitted-, “Almost all involved in the show have read the script and signed the contract! Let’s arrest the whole cast and crew?”
Director Ali Abbas Zafar via Twitter issued an unconditional apology on behalf of the team of Tandav and said that the makers have now altered the contentious scenes.
