The Odia music industry, a treasure trove of exceptional talent, boasts a gem that shines brighter than most: Susmita Das. A household name in Indian music, Susmita has carved a niche for herself with her velvety voice and unparalleled versatility. Her songs resonate with thousands, and her ability to master various musical styles and genres sets her apart in the industry.

Born on November 2nd, 1965, Susmita Das is a revered Indian singer known for her contributions to folk, classical, modern, and sacred music. Raised in Cuttack, Orissa, she attended Shailabala Women’s College and currently resides in Bhubaneswar, India. Her mellifluous voice has enchanted audiences across India, including Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Dehradun, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Jharkhand. With over 500 live performances in this region, she has garnered thousands of devoted fans.

 

Music has been Susmita’s lifelong passion, an unwavering love that she discovered at a tender age. As she grew, so did her devotion to music, eventually leading her to commit her entire life to this art form. Over the years, Susmita’s musical journey has taken her around the world, gracing some of the most prestigious stages in India and abroad. Her fan base spans generations, a testament to her ability to captivate both the young and the serious connoisseurs of music.

 

An integral part of the All India Radio (AIR), Doordarshan, and numerous private radio channels, Susmita often graces musical reality shows as a judge. With over 25 original music albums in both Odia and Hindi to her credit, her musical prowess is undeniable. However, Susmita’s meteoric rise to fame came after her performance at the prestigious Odisha Society of Americas (OSA) Convention in Detroit, USA. It was here that she released her debut album ‘Maya Darpan,’ which featured songs based on the poetry of Dr. Mayadhar Mansingh. Since then, there has been no looking back. Astonishingly, Susmita has conquered almost every genre, from light musicals to semi-classical, devotional, folk, traditional, and ghazals. Her songs, such as “Cycle,” “Malhara,” “Nua Thikana Ku,” and “Kaali Raati Katuthila Kaha Sapane,” have amassed millions of views on various social media platforms, solidifying her indomitable musical journey.

 

Looking ahead, Susmita Das has a series of intriguing projects in the pipeline, including collaborations with national and international artists. Her passion for addressing contemporary social issues through music is evident in her work. Inspired by her husband, Siddhanta Das, former DG of Forest, Government of India, she released a song highlighting the perils of climate change on this year’s Environment Day. Susmita’s mission has always been to engage young, attentive listeners with music that features outstanding lyrics. She frequently serves as a presenter or judge for musical programs and is a regular artist with All India Radio, Doordarshan, and many private television and radio channels, including FM stations.

 

Susmita’s projects are meticulously planned and executed, whether she is reviving forgotten classics or resurrecting the nostalgia of bygone eras through reimagined timeless pieces. She has been honored with numerous awards and accolades, including the Chhattisgarh State Award, Akhyay Samman, Namami Suramani Raghunath Award, Bhajan Samrat Bhikari Bal Award by Natraj Sangeet Vidyalaya, Dhenkanal, Blakrushna Dash Foundation Award.
