14 persons are killed by lightning strikes in West Bengal, predominantly farmers

According to an official, four persons died as a result of lightning strikes in the Purba Bardhaman area, and two each in Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas.According to a disaster management department official, lightning strikes claimed the lives of four individuals in the Purba Bardhaman district and two each in Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas.Six additional deaths were reported from the Paschim Midnapore and Howrah Rural districts, according to West Bengal police officials. “Three deaths each were reported from Paschim Midnapore and Howrah Rural,” a representative said.

He claimed that majority of the dead were farmers who died after being struck by lightning while working in fields of crops.According to him, lightning-struck thunderstorms were reported in a number of south Bengali districts, including Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, and Murshidabad.”At 16:45 hours, Alipore reported a gusty wind that lasted less than a minute and reached a top speed of 79 kmph. This is not a squall, a representative of the regional meteorological centre in this area noted.
