An 18-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district, and her body was later set on fire after being doused with kerosene in an attempt to destroy evidence, police said on Wednesday.
The victim, identified as Shalimunish, was engaged a few months ago to 22-year-old Imran, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikas Kumar said. Shalimunish was a resident of the Laldeeh Hussainabad Grant area, while Imran hailed from Chhapia in neighbouring Gonda district.
According to the police, Imran had developed a relationship with another woman, Sakina, through social media. When Shalimunish learned about the affair and raised objections, the accused allegedly hatched a conspiracy to eliminate her.
On Tuesday, Sakina reportedly called Shalimunish to her house, where Imran was already present. The police said that Sakina and Imran then strangled Shalimunish to death. In an effort to cover up the crime and portray it as a suicide, Imran, Sakina and Sakina’s mother, Zainab, allegedly poured kerosene on the body and set it ablaze.
All three accused have been arrested, and a case has been registered at the Rehra Bazar police station under relevant sections of law. The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, in another shocking incident from Uttar Pradesh, a woman and her alleged lover were arrested in Sambhal district for the murder of her husband. The accused, identified as Ruby and her companion, allegedly killed Rahul (38) and dismembered his body using a wood grinder, police said.
Ruby had filed a missing person complaint on November 18, claiming her husband had not returned home. Nearly a month later, on December 15, police recovered a mutilated body from a drain near the Eidgah area, leading to the arrest of the accused, according to a PTI report.
