The Andhra Pradesh government punished three top police officers, including a director general (DG), for their alleged involvement in the detention and harassment of an actor-model without carrying out a full investigation. Punitive action was taken after an investigation into former Intelligence Chief P Sitharama Anjaneyulu (DG rank), former Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kranti Rana Tata (Inspector General position), and former Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishal Gunni (Superintendent rank).
Last month, Mumbai-based Kadambari Jethwani filed a complaint with NTR Police Commissioner S V Rajasekhar Babu, alleging that the three had planned to collude with film producer and head of the YSR Congress Party K V R Vidyasagar. Vidyasagar had filed a case of forgery and extortion against Jethwani in February. According to Jethwani’s accusation, the police conspired with Vidyasagar to harass her and her parents, leading to their arrest and unannounced flight from Mumbai to Vijayawada.
Jethwani claimed in a case that received a lot of media attention that she and her elderly parents were unlawfully detained and humiliated by police. Her family was detained by the court for more than 40 days. Police allegedly allowed Vidyasagar to fake land documents in order to frame Jethwani and her family, preventing them from requesting bail for a number of days.
