Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and an officer of the Kolkata Police were detained on Saturday by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly tampering with evidence and conducting a false investigation into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run medical facility last month.
SHO of Tala Police Station The central agency chose Abhijit Mandal, the original investigator, because of the alleged missing evidence and delay in filing the FIR. On August 9, the body of the thirty-one-year-old doctor was found in the lecture room on the hospital’s fourth floor. Mandal had dispatched teams to the location of the crime. According to sources, Ghosh and Mandal are scheduled to appear before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court located in Sealdah on Sunday.
Ghosh was previously taken into custody by the federal agency as part of an independent probe into financial irregularities. In line with their investigation into the rape and murder case, the CBI tested the former principal again on August 26 using a polygraph. The central agency has been requested by the Calcutta High Court to provide a status report on the case by September 17.
