72 Student Suicides Reported In Odisha Schools & Colleges Over 5 Years

Over the past five years, up to 72 suicide instances have been reported at Odisha’s public and private schools and colleges. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi told the Odisha Assembly in a written response to a question posed by Congress MLA Sofia Firdous of Barabati-Cuttack that 72 student suicide cases had been reported in government and private schools and colleges throughout the state between 2020 and 2025 (up to February 28, 2025).

Majhi added that mental pressure, accused harassment, mental imbalance, denying phone use in the school residence hall, academic stress, miscommunication with friends, domestic conflict, problems resulting from romantic relationships, depression related to exams and romantic relationships, home sickness and parental restrictions on visiting home, and psychological issues were the causes of these incidents.
