Eight sluice gates were opened to let floodwaters out of the Hirakud Dam

For the second day on Monday, the Hirakud dam operators released flood water from the reservoir to reduce the increasing water levels brought on by heavy rain in the upper catchment region. The Mahanadi river has been receiving 1,17,126 cusecs of water per second from the dam to handle a 93,061 cusec inflow at the current reservoir water level of 614.49 feet.

1,16,982 cubic feet of water had entered the dam by 6 a.m. on Monday, and the same quantity of flood water is currently being released through five sluice gates and many canals. Two floodgates on the dam’s right spillway and six on the left are used to let floodwater out.

34 crest gates have also been unlocked by the authorities. The regions near the Mahanadi River’s bank, particularly the low-lying ones that might face flooding as a result of the dam’s discharge of water, have received a high alert from the authorities.
