Ujjain: A fire in the Mahakal temple that was “gulal-triggered” harmed 13 priests

Sanjay Guru, the chief priest of Bhasma Aarti, is one among the injured in the fire at Ujjain Mahakal Temple.Thirteen priests were hurt when a fire broke out in the Mahakal Temple’s sanctum sanctorum in Ujjain on Monday morning. The occurrence transpired amid the “bhasma aarti.””The district hospital here is treating thirteen priests who sustained burn injuries. There has been an order for a magisterial probe,” he informed ANI.

‘Gulal’ was being hurled inside the sanctum sanctorum as part of the Holi celebration, according to witnesses. The colourful gulal was thrown upon an earthen lamp by someone. They think the fire might have been started by chemicals in the gulal.

Among those hurt is Sanjay Guru, the head priest of Bhasma Aarti.Nine individuals are reported to be in critical condition. Indore has been recommended to them.”One of the injured informed said that someone threw gulal on priest Sanjeev from behind while he was performing the aarti,” Ujjain superintendent of police Pradeep Sharma told HT. The lamp was hit by the gull. The fire is thought to have been started by a chemical in the gulal.
