In Odisha, it is rare to see a political leader who seamlessly integrates the rich tapestry of local culture, history, and spirituality into their governance. Dr. Rabindra Narayan Behera stands out as a beacon of this integration. Elected as the Member of Parliament for Jajpur, Behera is celebrated not only for his political acumen but also for his deep commitment to Odisha’s heritage and development.
Dr. Behera’s journey began in the realm of technology. An esteemed IT expert and former Senior Director of the National Informatics Centre, he was instrumental in pioneering digital advancements in Odisha. Notably, he spearheaded the launch of an online donation system for the Puri Jagannath Temple in 1998, among other significant contributions such as developing over 300 crucial websites, including those for Odisha Government, Raj Bhavan, and the Odisha Police.
Despite his success in the IT sector, Behera chose to pivot to politics in 2019, retiring from his government position to serve the people of Jajpur directly. Joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he quickly made a mark by challenging the Biju Janata Dal’s stronghold in Jajpur. His election victory underscored his dedication to addressing local issues while promoting cultural values.
Dr. Behera’s background as a well-educated and multi-lingual individual further distinguishes him in the political arena. A devout follower of the Vedas and Upanishads, he brings a unique perspective to his role, advocating for the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage alongside modern development.
His influence extends beyond politics. Dr. Behera has received numerous accolades, including the World Glory Award in Bali, the Nelson Mandela International Covenant Award, and the e-India and e-Warrior Awards, recognizing his exceptional contributions to information technology and community service.
In addition to his political and professional achievements, Behera has been an active member of several organizations. He has served as the Chairman of the Computer Society of India, Bhubaneswar Branch, and held various leadership roles in the BJP, including Coordinator of the Odisha State Scheduled Caste Morcha and Deputy Coordinator of the Ganga River Protection Committee.
Dr. Rabindra Narayan Behera exemplifies a leader who harmonizes traditional values with progressive initiatives, making significant strides in both technology and politics while championing the rich cultural legacy of Odisha.
