BHUBANESWAR: CA Aswini Kar’s life is a testament to perseverance, dedication, and community service. Originally from Odisha, his journey in finance began with his schooling at OTM Higher Secondary School and a B.Com degree from Ravenshaw University in 1971. Determined to succeed, he moved to Bombay to pursue Chartered Accountancy (CA), passing both his prelims and mains on his first attempt. However, a family crisis prompted his return to Odisha, where his legacy of financial expertise and community impact truly began.
In 1973, following the passing of his father, Mr. Kar returned home, influenced by his mother’s wish to keep him close. He joined TISCO as an Account Officer in Belpahad, marking the start of his distinguished career in finance. Subsequently, he moved to Bhubaneswar to work as Deputy Controller of Finance at Indian Metals. After eight successful years in the corporate world, Mr. Kar decided to chart his own path and, in 1983, he established his own CA practice. This move proved pivotal; starting with a few colleagues, his firm expanded rapidly and now boasts offices in Delhi, Raipur, and four branches across Odisha, becoming a beacon of success in Chartered Accountancy.
Community Service Through Rotary
While his professional career flourished, Mr. Kar’s passion for community service found a platform in Rotary. Joining the Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar in 1986, he served as Club President and later as District Governor in 2002-03. Alongside his wife, Bijoylaxmi Kar, a cancer survivor and fellow Rotarian, Mr. Kar has been deeply involved in philanthropic efforts.
Their primary focus has been supporting the education of underprivileged girls. They provide scholarships to 4-5 girls annually from remote areas who excel academically. Mr. Kar is a firm believer in the transformative power of educating women, seeing them as the backbone of families and communities. He often says, “Educating women should be the prime motive of everyone.”
Their charitable work extends beyond education. They also provide medical assistance to children suffering from cancer and have supported women from Saria Sahi through the Parichay Foundation, helping them secure livelihoods. Mr. Kar lives by the principle that “service is self,” always giving back to the community that has supported him.
Challenges and Triumphs
Reflecting on his career, Mr. Kar acknowledges the challenges of establishing his practice in Bhubaneswar. Despite initial difficulties, his dedication and professionalism soon attracted ample work, enabling his firm’s growth. He advises younger professionals to view challenges as opportunities for personal and professional development, encouraging them to stay focused and resilient.
Tax Reforms and Professional Ethics
In his role as a financial auditor and technical reviewer, Mr. Kar advocates for tax compliance. “You must pay taxes,” he asserts. “The revenue generated benefits society, and you should be proud of your contribution.” He encourages clients to embrace transparency and adhere to legal guidelines, emphasizing that paying taxes fosters future investments. While he supports lower tax rates, he stresses the importance of increased tax compliance.
Advice to Aspiring Chartered Accountants
For aspiring CAs, Mr. Kar emphasizes the difficulty of the journey. Recalling the struggles he faced in Bombay, including finding accommodation and securing articleships, he advises students to take their studies seriously. “CA is not just another graduation course,” he says, urging students to be committed and adaptable in today’s evolving financial landscape.
The Future of Chartered Accountancy
Mr. Kar is optimistic about the future of CA firms, particularly with the rise of startups creating new opportunities for financial professionals. He cautions against undercutting competitors and encourages exploring new avenues within startups. He also highlights the importance of continuous education through courses offered by ICAI to stay updated in the field.
A Vision for Women’s Education and Social Change
Mr. Kar’s advocacy for women’s education is rooted in his belief that education transforms lives. He stresses the need for greater awareness in rural areas, where immediate income often takes precedence over long-term educational benefits. “Parents must understand that education is the key to improving their lives,” he insists.
He also voices concerns about the accessibility of CA education for students from rural areas, noting the high costs and limited scholarships. He advocates for increased government support, including scholarships and hostel facilities, to make the CA profession more accessible.
Aswini Kar’s life is an inspiring blend of professional achievement and selfless service. As a cadre advisor, financial auditor, and technical reviewer for The Rotary Foundation, he has earned a reputation for integrity and excellence. Yet, it is his unwavering commitment to giving back—to his profession, community, and the next generation—that truly defines his legacy. His story is a powerful reminder that success is not solely about personal achievement but also about lifting others along the way.
