Despite earlier warnings, several residential societies in Greater Noida West continue to operate with inactive or partially functional rainwater harvesting systems, officials said on Thursday. A second round of inspections conducted by the groundwater department on Tuesday revealed that many of these systems remain either completely shut down or only partially operational.
“In some societies where four rainwater harvesting units were installed, at least one or two were found non-functional,” said Ankita Rai, hydrologist with the groundwater department. She added that the department had previously issued notices to these societies, yet no significant corrective measures had been taken.
Frustrated by the lack of compliance, the department has now issued final notices to the defaulters, giving them a one-week deadline to ensure full restoration of their rainwater harvesting units. Failure to comply within the stipulated time may invite penalties of up to ₹5 lakh.
The move comes as part of a broader push to ensure sustainable water management in the region, particularly ahead of the monsoon season. Authorities emphasized that functioning rainwater harvesting systems are crucial for groundwater recharge and long-term water security in the area.
Residents and management committees have been urged to take immediate action, as the deadline approaches and enforcement measures loom.
