In just 148 days of the current fiscal year, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) unloaded more than 100 million tons of goods, marking a major milestone in freight transportation, authorities said Tuesday. As of August 26, 2025, ECoR had handled 100.55 million tons, an increase of 7.43 million tons, or 8%, over the same time the previous year.
Performance by division: Sambalpur Division: 17 million tons; Waltair Division: 25.46 million tons; Khurda Road Division: 58.1 million tons The zone is essential to supplying the logistical requirements of the ports and industries that fall within its purview, such as Paradeep, Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Gopalpur, and Dhamra. Commodities including coal, iron ore, alumina, manganese, and bauxite make up the majority of the traffic, with important industries supplied including steel, electricity, aluminum, fertilizers, and cement.
The accomplishment was 12 days ahead of schedule compared to FY 2024–25 (160 days) and 23 days ahead of schedule compared to FY 2023–24 (171 days), according to ECoR authorities, highlighting enhanced operational efficiency and robust port connection. This development was attributed by railway officials to improved cooperation with ports and industries, quicker turnaround times, and consistent improvements in freight handling.
ECoR reaffirmed its commitment to supporting India’s industrial and economic growth by ensuring the faster, seamless movement of essential goods across sectors.
