In 1981, Dr. Lakhotia took his first entrepreneurial step by setting up Maa Durga Hydrocarbon, a solvent distillation plant in Liluah, Howrah. The venture turned into a resounding success and encouraged him to explore new opportunities. A year later, he launched Maa Durga Steel Industries, a re-rolling mill in Howrah. But his true strength lay in anticipating change—he soon transformed this mill into Bhawani Plastic Industries, specializing in PVC pipes at a time when the demand for plastic products was on the rise. Around the same period, he founded Bhawani Polypack to cater to the rapidly growing packaging industry. These ventures not only marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey but also showcased his instinct for diversification and ability to stay ahead of the curve.
By the mid-1980s, he recognized India’s rapid urbanization was creating an urgent need for quality housing. In 1987, he laid the foundation of Bhawani Construction Pvt. Ltd. in Kolkata, marking his entry into real estate. The company’s initial projects in Howrah and Kolkata covered 94,000 sq. ft., setting new benchmarks in design and delivery. It was a bold step that transformed his entrepreneurial trajectory and laid the groundwork for Bhawani Group’s enduring presence in the real estate industry.
Never one to confine himself to a single sector, Dr. Lakhotia soon diversified into healthcare. With a vision to provide world-class diagnostic services, he established the Lakhotia Medical Center in Kolkata, equipped with modern facilities and eminent doctors. By 1995, this grew into Lakhotia Diagnostics, which today operates 14 NABL-accredited branches across Howrah and Hooghly, offering MRI, CT, ultrasound, and advanced pathology services. This venture reflected his philosophy of building businesses that not only succeed commercially but also serve the greater good.
Recognizing Odisha’s immense potential, Dr. Lakhotia expanded Bhawani Group’s footprint by opening its first office in Cuttack at Arunodaya Market. His debut project in the state was a duplex housing development on 64,000 sq. ft. in Bidanasi—a pioneering move at the time. But it was in Bhubaneswar that the group left a historic mark. In 2009, Bhawani Group launched the city’s first iconic apartment complex—BMC Bhawani Enclave in Sahid Nagar. This was followed by the opening of BMC Bhawani Mall in 2012, a landmark development that redefined Bhubaneswar’s commercial landscape and marked a turning point for the group.
Since then, Bhawani Group has continued to shape cityscapes across Kolkata, Howrah, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack with a diverse portfolio of residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects. From Howrah Nand Enclave and Kamala Inn Dankuni to Bhawani Jubilee Tower in Cuttack and Bhawani Leela Residency in Bhubaneswar, its developments have become benchmarks in modern urban living. Ongoing projects like Bhawani Ayan, Bhawani Uma Plaza, and Bhawani Kalinga Villa, along with upcoming projects such as Bhawani Arya, Bhawani Gayatri Palace, and Bhawani Radhe, promise to further elevate standards of design, connectivity, and sustainability.
