Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi lay the foundation stone for the state-of-the-art “Pipili Chandua Handicraft Hub” in Pipili in the Puri district as part of a significant effort to protect and promote Odisha’s famous Pipili Chandua craft. The initiative, which is expected to cost about ₹80 crore, aims to connect the traditional appliqué craft industry with both domestic and foreign markets.
The Chief Minister described Pipili Chandua as more than just a handicraft, saying it encompasses “Odia Asmita” (Odia identity) and symbolizes the pride of the Odia people. He pointed out that the centuries-old art form is inextricably linked to the world-famous Rath Yatra and the customs of Lord Jagannath. According to Majhi, the state government’s goal is to establish Pipili Chandua on the international market while guaranteeing the craftsmen’ sustainable means of subsistence.
According to official estimates, the project will directly benefit more than 6,000 artisans from Pipili and nearby areas. A dedicated Raw Material Bank will be established under the project to ensure the availability of quality raw materials at affordable prices. The Chief Minister also highlighted plans to equip artisans with skills required for the digital economy. Special training programmes in digital marketing, branding and packaging will be provided, with a focus on empowering women artisans and members of self-help groups.
The proposed handicraft hub is expected to serve as a comprehensive ecosystem for production, marketing, skill development and promotion of the traditional craft. Besides preserving Odisha’s rich cultural heritage, the initiative is expected to accelerate the economic growth of artisan communities and create new market opportunities for their products.
