The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation has initiated steps to start bio-mining activities at the Bhuasuni dump yard soon. Mayor Sulochana Das had assembled a meeting with senior leaders and political representatives of the region.
Jatni MLA Suresh Chandra Routray, local Sarpanch Tapan Kumar Chakrabarti, and senior BMC officials attended the meeting. Work for this will commence on Akshay Tritia falling on May 3.
Bio-mining is a process of reclaiming the land utilized as a waste dumpsite for several years as per MSW (management of solid waste) Rules 2016, CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) 2019 guidelines, and other applicable rules and regulations.
Suvendu Kumar Sahoo, Deputy Commissioner, Sanitation, BMC said “The project broadly involves scientific management of dumped waste by excavating the same from the heap and segregating into various categories i.e. compost formed on account of biodegradation of organic waste over a period of time to be utilized for farming, RDF to be utilized by cement units and non-dangerous inert waste to be utilized as landfills for low lying areas.”
Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation executed the Agreement with the Selected Agency i.e. a Joint Venture between M/s Jagruti Welfare Organisation and M/s Jan Adhar Seva Bhavi Sanstha on 23rd February 2022. In the initial phases of the contract period, the Agency is required to complete all the ancillary activities such as procurement of machinery, construction of site office, testing, and survey works.
The agency as of date has completed testing of ambient air quality, groundwater condition & soil condition and has also initiated procurement of requisite machines & equipment as per terms of the agreement, the Mayor informed.
The total expected quantity of legacy waste dumped at Bhuasuni is 16 lakh MT. The Agency shall process at least 2000 MT waste on daily basis and complete the project in 36 months.
