President Murmu shares story behind her name “Droupadi”

Based on the magnificent Mahabharata characters, the name Droupadi, was given to the first tribal President of India by her school teacher.

In an interview, she revealed that her Santali name was “Puti” and was changed to Droupadi by her school teacher.

She said, “Droupadi wasn’t my original name. I got it from a teacher in another district, not from her hometown of Mayurbanji.” She claimed that the teachers in the tribal- dominated Mayurbanji district arrived from Balasore or Cuttack in the 1960s.

She mentioned that names do not die in Santhali culture. When a girl is born, she takes the name of her grandmother, and her son takes the nomenclature of his grandfather.

Droupadi became the 15th president of India on Monday. Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana swore at a ceremony in the Parliament’s Central Hall.
