Etching and painting on palm leaves, one of the oldest crafts in existence, is still a thriving industry in the Indian state of Odisha. There, the art, known as Talapatrachitras, has advanced to new heights. All Indian homes value the prized decorations made from palm leaves. When written communication first emerged, the art was born. On the palm leaf, messages and texts were inscribed to be shared. The practise of embellishing text with graphics spread over time and eventually developed into an art form. The ethnic arts, which are predominantly done by artists in Puri and Cuttack, are still among the most respected ones there.
The ethnic art form consists basically of writing letters and artistic designs on palm leaves that have been mostly trimmed into regular sizes and fastened together by two wooden plank covers that are strung through a hole in the middle. The unripe leaves of the palm tree are first chopped and partially dried before being prepared as a palm leaf. After being seasoning-buried in wetlands for 4-5 days, they are dried in shade. They are next knitted or strung together based on the situation.
After the etching is finished, they are occasionally sewn. On strips of leaf, etching is done within lines using an iron pen. The etching is highlighted by applying a paste composed of bean leaves, charcoal formed of burned coconut shells, til oil, and turmeric. In this area, colours are hardly ever employed; when they are, they are only used sparingly and in very muted tones. Paintings are done with mineral and vegetable pigments. The creators of palm leaf etchings depict legendary events, gods and goddesses with accurate depictions of their hairstyles and clothing, as well as various animals, plants, and other natural elements. The most frequently used themes are Saraswati, Ganesha, Radha and Krishna, and Durga.Also carved are tales and episodes from the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and other epics. The depictions of nature in the paintings and drawings are also remarkable.
